When you buy meat for you and your family you want to know where it came from. You want to know how it was reared and what country it was produced in and Welsh Lamb has some of the highest standards of animal welfare.

We’re proud to say that the love, care and attention our farmers lavish upon Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef has been recognised by the European Commission in the form of Protected Geographical Indication status. You can find more about this prestigious award here. But one particularly important benefit of PGI status is that it tells you exactly where your meat has come from.

Red meat authority Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) acts as a guardian of the Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef PGI designations. We make sure our producers are living up to the very highest standards.

This means that every animal must be fully traceable from field to butcher’s shop or supermarket.

Every abattoir and cutting plant using the Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef designations must be approved by HCC. Our inspections are carried out annually.

Our red meat must comply will all government regulatory requirements and best practice guidelines.

And if any retailer labels its red meat as having PGI status when it doesn’t, this is an offence under the Trade Descriptions Act (1968) and could lead to prosecution by Trading Standards officers.
